JAY — Selectpersons on Monday approved the purchase of a 2019 Ford Interceptor police cruiser from Quirk Auto Group for $33,187, Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere said Tuesday.
The board also agreed to withdraw requests for proposals for curbside trash and recycling service for 2019-20 after legal review of an existing contract, she said.
It is the second new cruiser the board has voted to purchase since Dec. 10, in light of expected changes and increased cost of the 2020 Ford Interceptor SUV cruisers.
Selectpersons approved the purchase of a 2018 Ford Interceptor SUV on Dec. 10 for $23,300, factoring in a $5,500 trade-in value.
In the second cruiser purchase approved Monday, Quirk Auto Group offered the town a $2,000 trade-in value for a 2006 Ford Explorer, LaFreniere said. The vehicle had 90,000 miles on it as of Nov. 12, according to Police Chief Richard Caton IV.
Selectpersons will consider their options and will discuss them further at a January meeting, LaFreniere said.
The Police Department’s reserve account has $31,566 in it after the purchase of the 2018 cruiser, she said. The board’s options include selling the cruiser outright or using it as a town vehicle, she said.
If it goes to the town, the money to make up the difference for the 2019 cruiser will need to come out of another budget, she said.
In the curbside contract extension, the town sent out 13 requests for proposals for service earlier this month after a new contract was developed to provide the service beginning July 1, 2019.
The town now has a contract with Archie’s Inc. of Mexico to provide the service until June 30, 2019.
After a legal review of specific contract extension language in the original contract approved in 2015, the board decided it was in the best interest of the town to withdraw the request for proposal, LaFreniere said.
The language in the original contract, which ran from November 2015 through June 30, 2018, provided for a three-year extension. This language has previously been viewed as allowing for up to three years, she said.
The town now pays $123,000 a year under the extended contract, which will stay the same through June 30, 2020.
The third year of the contract extension will cost $124,230 for service from July 1, 2020, to June 30, 2021, LaFreniere said.
