POLAND — Poland Community School went without water for hours Tuesday — one of the hottest days of the summer — because of a power outage, Superintendent Dennis Duquette said.

Crews were doing reconstruction work on Route 26 Tuesday in front of the school, Duquette said, and “we lost power for about two to two and a half hours.”

The school is supplied by well water so without electricity, there is no water.

On the second day of school, K-6 students went without water, Duquette said. “We were just about to go to Poland Spring to get bottled water when the electricity came back on,” he said.

One parent complained Tuesday that Poland Community School students were not allowed to get any water, that his children’s classes are on the second floor “and it was 1,000 degrees.” When there was water it was brown, the parent said.

Duquette said for several hours Tuesday “there was no water to get,” but when water was available it was clear.

It was warm on the school’s second floor. “That is universal,” Duquette said.

The good news, Duquette said, is when the construction is done the school will be using municipal water.
