Society program

FARMINGTON — The Western Maine Audubon Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, in Room C23 in the Roberts Learning Center, University of Maine at Farmington. Ben Godsoe from Madrid Township will present a program on the Fly Rod Crosby Trail. Godsoe is working on an Americorps grant and has spearheaded the development of the new hiking trail in Franklin County.

Cornelia (Fly Rod) Crosby, who famously said, “I would rather fish any day than go to heaven,” was the first registered Maine guide. She is also said to be the only person to have shot a caribou in Maine. The trail, which runs from Strong to Oquossoc along the Sandy River Valley, seeks to tie together her old stomping grounds as well as to highlight the history, culture and sights of that part of Maine.
