An old friend turned into the Lewiston Maineiacs’ worst enemy Saturday night.

Less than 10 seconds away from a win to offset a tough Friday night loss to Quebec, former Maineiacs’ captain Billy Lacasse fired a shot at Lewiston’s Andrey Makarov. The rebound went to Emrik Guillemette, who beat Makarov to send the game to overtime. After a scoreless extra session, Chicoutimi skaters netted a pair of shootout goals to Lewiston’s none, and earned a 5-4 shootout win over the visiting Maineiacs at the Georges Vezina Centre.

Lacasse, a three-year player for the Maineiacs and last season’s captain, finished with two goals and two assists for the Sags.

“The goal, was just a shot on net from (Lacasse),” Maineiacs’ coach J.F. Houle said. “It was a 6-on-4 (for a while) because we had a penalty and they’d pulled their goalie, they had an extra body in front and they scored. That would have been a nice win, we needed that. We had it with seven seconds left.”

The Maineiacs’ Achilles heel Saturday was the penalty box. Chicoutimi enjoyed nine power plays on the game, and though the Sags scored just once with the extra skater, the shot count was decidedly in their advantage thanks to all of the Maineiacs; indiscretions.

“We were way too undisciplined,” Houle said. “We had a lot of shots against us, and Makarov did very, very well tonight. We can’t take so many penalties against anyone in this league and hope to win the games. We have a lot of talking to do with the players this week.”

Matthew Bissonnette appeared to rebound from his sluggish return to the lineup in Friday’s loss with a much more solid effort Saturday. He was in on two of the Maineiacs’ four goals, along with linemate Stefan Fournier. Both finished with a goal and an assist. Etienne Brodeur also collected another goal, his fourth of the year, on a shorthanded breakaway in the third period. That goal stood as the game-winner until Guillemette’s equalizer.

“The forwards did a lot better job backchecking,” Houle said. “There were still a couple of breakdowns, but most of their shots came on the power play.”

Houle also singled out a couple of the team’s skaters — Antoine Houde-Caron and Sam Henley — as having a “great” game Saturday.

“They were outstanding (Saturday),” Houle said. “It’s got to be everybody working hard in the game. They’ll play a lot for now. The guys who work the hardest are going to play the most.”

Lacasse answered Bissonnette’s first-period tally with his first of the season to negate an early 1-0 Lewiston lead. Guillaume Asselin made it 2-1 for the home team to close out the first.

In the second, Francis Beauvillier and Fournier scored to give the Maineiacs the lead back, and saw that wiped out early in the third, again on a Lacasse goal.

In the shootout, Beauvillier and Houde-Caron missed for Lewiston, while Guillaume Asselin and Rock Regimbald netted goals for the Sags.

The Maineiacs play next Friday and Saturday against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
