RUMFORD — Rebecca Lloyd has been named the recipient of the second annual Peg Blouin Scholarship from Rumford Hospital. Lloyd graduated from Telstar High School and worked for the U.S. Postal Service and the Town of Rumford for several years before beginning nursing studies at Central Maine Medical School of Nursing and Health Professions last year.
“My mother always thought I belonged in health care,” said Lloyd. “But due to family circumstances I hadn’t had an opportunity to pursue a career in that field until now.”
Now in her second year of the program that will lead to an associate degree and, after successfully passing an exam, a registered nurse designation, Lloyd served clinical rotations during her first year at Rumford Hospital and Rumford Community Home.
She hopes to return to Rumford to work when her program is completed next year. Lloyd lives in Rumford Point with her 13-year-old son, Michael.
The Peg Blouin Nursing Scholarship was established in 2009 upon Blouin’s retirement, after 42 years as a registered nurse at Rumford Hospital. Having been a recipient of the Auxiliary scholarship, which enabled her to earn her nursing degree, Blouin gives back to her community through the scholarship.
The annual award is $1,250 to a nursing student, not one studying for an advanced degree or specialization, after that student completes a successful first semester. The recipient is chosen by a panel comprising the Director of Nursing, the Nurse Manager of Med/Surg and the Nurse Manager of the Emergency Department. The award is based on merit and need.
