When Etienne Brodeur began playing alongside Pierre-Olivier Morin and Michael Chaput, coach J.F. Houle was hoping the speedy Lewiston Maineiacs’ winger and leading scorer would put a spark into two players who hadn’t played up to their enormous potential.
Wednesday was Chaput’s turn, and this weekend, Morin started to get rolling.
Sunday, Brodeur got back into the act, too. Brodeur scored his team-leading 11th and 12th goals of the season, Morin had a goal and an assist and captain Cameron Critchlow added four assists to lead Lewiston to a 5-2 win over cellar-dwelling Baie-Comeau, running the team’s win streak to a season-high three games.
“We’re really excited to hop back on the bus with four points from this weekend,” Houle said. “This was a successful road trip.”
Chaput didn’t earn any points Sunday alongside Brodeur and Morin, but the centerman won eight faceoffs, was a plus-1 and had a pair of good hits.
“That line is working really well right now, we’re going to keep them together for now,” Houle said. “(Brodeur) had been playing awesome, his timing is really good and he’s been one-timing the puck well. he has the speed, and those other two guys with him, it helps all of them.”
The Maineiacs had to overcome another sluggish start to a game, though, something with which Houle is still concerned.
“We seem to be the type of team that picks up the intensity as the game goes along,” Houle said. “Once everyone settles in, we get our legs underneath us and we’re good. but we have to able to do that sooner.”
Skating shorthanded again, with just 16 skaters and a pair of goalies, Lewiston allowed the first goal of the game at 5:21 of the opening period.
The team regrouped and Olivier Dame-Malka evened things up with 41 seconds to play in the first period.
After a scoreless second, things opened up in the third, but not before Nick Champion had his say. The Maineiacs’ 20-year-old keeper stopped 18 of 20 shots to earn the win, and none was more important than a second-period stop on a 2-on-0.
“We gave the puck away and he made an incredible stop,” Houle said. “That was thr turning point in the game.”
In the third, still knotted at 1-1 late, the floodgates opened. Brodeur and Stefan Fournier netted power play goals less than two minutes apart to put Lewiston in control. Brodeur added another on a nifty drop pass from Morin, and after the Drakkar tacked on another, Morin punctuated the win with a goal at 18:33 of the final frame.
The Maineiacs have a short rest before facing the Shawinigan Cataractes on Wednesday at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. Next weekend, the Maineiacs hit the road again, this time for a pair in Gatineau.
