BRUNSWICK — Harold ‘Hal’ B. Myrick, 69, of Topsham,  passed away on Nov. 5, at Mid Coast Hospital, as the result of a very aggressive cancer.

Hal was born in Lewiston, Feb. 6, 1941, the son of Arthur and Virginia (Burgess) Myrick. He attended Auburn schools and graduated from Edward Little High School in 1959. On May 17 of 1986, he married Patricia Sweeney Myrick.

Hal was employed by Bath Iron Works in their procurement department for more than 25 years, before retiring in 2006. Previous employers included Bankroft Martin Construction, Mount Appetite Co. in Auburn (where he was an arborist) and Superior Concrete in Auburn.

One of Hal’s biggest joys was youth sports. As a child he played football, basketball and baseball. As an adult, he played men’s slow-pitch softball. He then began coaching. He coached the Brunswick Women’s Slow-Pitch Softball League and brought them to the National Tournament in North Dakota. He was the president and founder of Brunswick Youth Soccer League (BYSL) and coached teams for many years. He was the coach of the Westbrook College softball team in 1994 and 1995 (where he used his coaching stipend to pay for the team to attend a tournament in Virginia).

However, his true love was coaching girls and boys ice hockey. He truly had a passion for hockey and was an inspiration for many players and coaches. He started coaching hockey to young players in 1975 as a Mite coach for Brunswick Youth Hockey and continued through the early 1980s at the Squirt, Peewee, Bantam and Midget levels. In 1984, he organized and coached the first Brunswick Junior High School Hockey team. He started coaching the Brunswick High School Boys JV team in 1980, and became the varsity coach in 1988 from which he retired from in 2000. In 2007, Hal returned to coaching as an assistant coach for the Brunswick Junior High School and in 2008 he became the head coach, a position he held until his death.

In addition, he organized many hockey tournaments, including the Brunswick High School Christmas Tournament (1981, 1982), the Brunswick/Mt. Ararat Friendship Tournament (1989), the Brunswick/Mt. Ararat Benefit Alumni Game (1995-1997) that benefited the Family Focus Daycare and most recently the Battle of the Bridge/Alumni game (2008, 2009). He enjoyed following both, Mt Ararat and Brunswick High School sports and attended many games in support of the local, young athletes.

Other things he had a passion for included his lawn, cars, pool, train room, den and Dunkin’ Donuts and Tim Horton coffee. He will be remembered by many for his great sense of humor, integrity, loyalty and positive attitude.
