“This is one less thing to worry about over the holidays,” said James Deschaine of Lewiston, left, before picking out a turkey with Joe Mailey, center, from Auburn, at the IBEW 567 Union Hall on Goddard Road in Lewiston on Monday. The Western Maine Labor Council prepared to give out 40 baskets of mostly local donated food to laid-off workers, like Deschaine and Mailey, in Androscoggin, Oxford and Franklin counties. This was the first year the council had teamed up with Solidarity Harvest, which started in Bangor eight years ago to deliver food to laid-off workers over the holidays. The Western Maine Labor Council also used it as an opportunity to call on U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins to sign a bill extending unemployment benefits in Maine.
