100 years ago,1911

More than 100 French citizens attended a meeting held last evening in Cercle Canadien Hall and discussed the advisability of running one of their own nationality for mayor this spring. The question was discussed at some length and it was decided to call a large mass meeting in Dominican Hall, Lincoln Street.

All who spoke appeared to think that before a French-American is put forward as a candidate that the census of public opinion should be ascertained and that the French people should unite on one man. F. X. Belleau, Dr. R. J. Wiseman and Henri Bechard are considered aspirants for the office, but no names were mentioned at the meeting last night.

50 years ago, 1961

“King” has left home again. Firemen at the Lisbon Road substation in Lewiston would appreciate any word of his whereabouts, should someone spot him during his travels.

“King” is a 6-year-old Dalmatian dog and mascot of the substation. He’s black and white.

He left the station once before, just about a year ago, and was found a few days later with a dog friend.

Androscoggin County Judge of Probate Laurier T. Raymond Jr. of Lewiston announced Wednesday that he is seeking re-election.

Raymond, the senior partner in the law firm of Marshall, Raymond, Dionne, Bonneau and Gosselin, is serving his fifth full term. He has held the position since December of 1965.
