AUBURN — Lewiston-Auburn Community Little Theatre will hold auditions for its upcoming production of “Blood Brothers” on Sunday and Monday, Jan. 16-17, at Great Falls Arts Center.
A musical written by Willy Russell, “Blood Brothers” is one of the longest-running musicals in London theater, with the 1988 West End production still running.
The show will be directed by Celeste Philippon and musically directed by Paul G. Caron. It will be presented April 8-17.
Set in Britain, the musical has a contemporary nature vs. nurture plot, revolving around fraternal twins, Mickey and Eddie, who are separated at birth. One brother is raised in a family of great privilege; the other is raised in poverty. They become friends in their childhood, unaware of their relation to one another.
One brother becomes an Oxbridge-graduated councilor; the other is unemployed and ends up in prison.
They both fall in love with the same girl, which rips apart their friendship and results in tragic deaths.
The story is told through a narrator, who is presented as a pivotal character, a manifestation of one of the themes in the play — the idea that life is a game.
The narrator treats the characters as players of his game, manipulating their lives and playing off their superstitious beliefs. He is always visible on stage, acting as a Mephistophelean puppeteer of sorts who manipulates the lives and families of Mrs. Johnstone and Mrs. Lyons.
Auditions for a cast of 13 characters will be at 6 p.m. on Jan. 16 and at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 17. Actors must be prepared with sheet music and will audition with accompaniment.
