Canton firefighter Brie Blanchette sprays fire-suppressing foam on wood around the charred wall of a late 1800s barn early Tuesday afternoon at 76 Main St. in Canton. Fire Chief Shane Gallant said an improperly vented wood stove caught the wall on fire. “The back corner of the building is gutted right out,” he said. Assistant fire Chief Mark Blanchette estimated damage at $3,000 to $4,000 due to a lot of antique wood stored in the two-story barn, which was 12 feet from a three-story apartment house. Firefighters from Canton, Dixfield and Peru helped extinguish the fire, although Canton Town Clerk Kathy Hutchins said a tenant “put a lot of water on it and probably saved it.” There were no injuries.
