AUGUSTA — “Mrs. Smith Goes to Washington,” a play following the personal and professional lives of U.S. Sen. Margaret Chase Smith,  will be performed at the University of Maine at Augusta in observance of Women’s History Month.

The one-woman play written by Linda Britt offers an intimate look at the life and times of Smith, told in her own words and in the words of the people closest to her. It follows Smith’s journey from humble beginnings in Skowhegan to a position of power and respect as the first woman to have her name placed in nomination for president of the United States.

Sally Jones, as Senator Smith, relates personal anecdotes and recites from her infamous “Declaration of Conscience” speech denouncing the excesses of Sen. Joseph McCarthy’s anti-Communist crusade.

Smith was one of two inductees at the first Maine Women’s Hall of Fame in 1990. On Saturday, March 19, U.S. Sen. Susan M. Collins and Orono Professor Emerita of Food Sciences and Human Nutrition Katherine O. Musgrave will be inducted.

 Performances will be at 4 p.m. on Friday, March 11, and 7 p.m. on Friday, March 18, at Jewett Hall Auditorium. Snow date: 7 p.m. Saturday, March 19 Tickets are $13 for adults, $5 for students.
