WATERBORO, Maine (AP) — The Maine Fire Marshal’s office says an 86-year-old woman was killed after she was trapped in her bedroom by a fire in her Waterboro home.
Officials say neighbors tried to rescue Cecile Morey Wednesday, but they were unable to remove a screen from her bedroom window to get her out.
The fire was reported about 9:30 p.m.
Morey’s 17-year-old granddaughter, Kaitlin Merrill, was treated for smoke inhalation after she escaped the burning house through a basement window.
The teenager then ran to a neighbor’s house for help.
Investigators say the fire started in the basement of the single-story house. They are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
