NEW SHARON — A local man was arrested Sunday after Franklin County deputies investigated a complaint from a family member that he was stealing prescription medication from them, county Lt. Niles Yeaton said Tuesday.

Dennis Smith, 52, of Flagg Road in New Sharon was arrested on felony charges of aggravated forgery, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and stealing drugs, Yeaton said.

Smith was released on $250 cash bail and is scheduled to appear at a Farmington court on April 22.

A family member complained that Smith was stealing Percocet, a narcotic pain reliever, and also was a convicted felon and had several firearms at the residence, Yeaton said.

Deputies Christopher Chase and Cpl. Stephen Charles investigated the matter,  assisted by Deputy Heidi Wilcox.

During the investigation, three firearms were seized along with a 2010 Maine hunting license, Yeaton said.

The aggravated forgery charge, which carries up to 10 years in prison if convicted, stems from the hunting license, he said. There is a section on the license that is related to a convicted felon status, Yeaton said. Convicted felons are prohibited from possessing firearms, he said.
