STOWE, Vt. — Bates College junior Bump Heldman of Auburn placed 11th in the mens’ giant slalom at the NCAA National Collegiate Skiing Championships on Wednesday at Stowe Mountain Resort.

Heldman finished just one hundredth of a second out of 10th place and All-America status with a two-run combined time of 2:03.90. He was seventh among American skiers and second among non-Division I skiers.

Heldman led a strong showing by Bates’ alpine skiers. Senior Ben Manter finished 19th in the 36-man field, while senior John Canney placed 27th. Senior Micaela Holland took 24th in the women’s GS.

In the Nordic event, seniors Natalie Ruppertsberger and Kirsten Gill took 32nd and 33rd, respectively in the women’s 5K freestyle individual start. Bates’ two ski teams combined for 98 points to place 11th among 21 teams at NCAAs, with action still to come on Friday and Saturday.
