LISBON FALLS — Lisbon High School administrators, teachers, staff and students promoted Spread the Word to End the Word by holding a school-wide assembly on March 2.

Spread the Word to End the Word is an ongoing effort by Special Olympics to raise the consciousness of society about the dehumanizing and hurtful effects of the word retard(ed) and encourage people to stop using that word.

The Project UNIFY leadership team opened the assembly with statements about the movement and to introduce the new R-Word – RESPECT. A video was shown, followed by the students signing a large poster promising to not use the R-Word. Many also pledged on line with their teachers.
