Paul Poliquin: Let the mayor speak
As a former city councilor and council president for 10 years, I served with four mayors. They were Alfred Plourde, Maurice Labbe, Jim Howaneic and John Jenkins. All were great mayors. I always wanted to know what the mayors thought on any agenda item facing Lewiston and its residents. All four mayors spoke out on […]
Barbara Shapiro: Don’t risk harming Lake Auburn by developing it
I write about the latest ruling on Lake Auburn‘s new watershed boundaries and better septic system rules. Though septic systems should be made as effective as possible near the lake, runoff from development in the watershed would be more harmful. Better land use is most effective in protecting the lake’s clean water. There seems to […]
Frank Earley: Scam calls need to be regulated
I wonder why there is no regulation concerning scam calls. I’m disabled, so I’m home most of the time. On an average day I receive five to seven scam calls per day. Mainers can count on more of the same, which means your costs will continue to increase while your elected representatives pat themselves on the back for sending you a $450 check.
Austin Bay: 2023’s strategic challenges: Introducing big debt
Communist China threatens the world. That said, America’s own structural debt is the biggest self-inflicted threat the U.S. faces.
Cal Thomas: Where have all the intellectuals gone?
How do we get them back? By starting in the schools with real ideas and concepts being taught by non-woke teachers, or in private schools, or the growing home school movement. Have students read the classics, the Constitution and Federalist Papers, instead of books promoting various cultural fads and political agendas.
Rich Lowry: The GOP is the self-loathing party
The fact is that an anti-authority spirit pervades a portion of the party, and the authority it opposes is that of its own side.
