Leonard Pitts Jr.: Call it a stealth coup
When the will of the majority repeatedly has so little impact on the actions of their government, it’s fair to wonder if it really is their government, if their country can still be called a democracy. Certainly it cannot be called a healthy one.
John Maloney: Comp plan calls for commercial zone along shoreland
At Turner’s annual town meeting, scheduled for Saturday, April 9, voters will be asked to adopt the same comprehensive plan that was not approved at an Aug. 16, 2021 special town meeting. I voted no the first time and will vote no this time as well. I’m voting “no” on the proposed comprehensive plan because […]
Mark Eyerman: Kudos for ski championship coverage
Thanks to the Sun Journal for its outstanding coverage of the U.S. Alpine Championships at Sugarloaf. Its coverage was better than that of national ski racing publications. Lost Valley has a great ski racing heritage. Well done. Mark Eyerman, Gorham
Arin Quintel: Bring representative government back
As this is an election year I think it timely to remind the citizens of Maine that this is an opportunity to get back to our republic’s roots and bring true representation back to Augusta. Most of the people I talk to on a daily basis all agree things are not going well economically and […]
Thomas Lord: Vehicle inspections should be voluntary

Its many inlets, outlets and tree lined banks have been a safe haven for loons, eagles, herons and many more species of our feathered friends. But most importantly, the lake’s very existence has been the lifeblood of us all. Its […]
Cal Thomas: A second ‘Contract with America’
Mike Pence is arguing for a return to policies that work. He addresses what polls show are the top concerns of most conservative voters. In trying to help Republicans win back a congressional majority in the fall, Pence may be helping himself for a White House run in 2024.
Paul Poliquin: Cities’ shared drinking water could be in jeopardy
My thanks to Lewiston Mayor Carl Sheline for looking out for Lewiston and Auburn taxpayers. I agree with Mayor Sheline on a moratorium and a comprehensive study. I question the effects of development of 148 acres on and near Lake Auburn. As a former Lewiston council president and member of the City Council for 10 […]
