Where to cut? I have long promoted the idea that what is needed is an outside auditor to come to Washington, D.C., and review every program and agency, recommending which ones to keep and more importantly identifying which ones have outlived their usefulness, or were never useful.

Alan Whitman: Forgive Auburn councilor’s statement
Raised as a child of missionaries, I grew up as an American in a foreign land. My parents taught me that Christian values were the fundamental underpinning of American culture, while instructing that we should always be respectful of other cultures. My understanding is that an essential element of the values that were brought forth […]
John Tetreault: Many Americans giving up freedom for government care
Together we stand; divided we fall. Looks like we are very divided. Rome fell when people saw that they could get free stuff from the government, and now it is happening, big time, in the U.S.A. I remember, as a kid, my parents refusing to go on welfare. They were proud of working their way […]
Froma Harrop: No one is forcing you to get the vaccine
Those who won’t get the quick jab in the arm, for whatever reason, have an alternative. If they want to keep their jobs, they might have to let someone push a 6-inch Q-tip-like swab up their nose on a regular basis, but — and repeat this for the last time — it’s their choice.

I supported Adrienne Bennett when she ran for Congress because of her strong stance against the New England Clean Energy Connect corridor. When she lost and moved to Texas, I was sad to see her go, but I wished her the best. I was shocked to hear that she accepted a job working for NECEC […]
In rebuttal: Sen. Richard Bennett: Question 1 doesn’t allow retroactive law passage

Unfortunately, she has changed her position on the project in order to take a job with NECEC as a spokesperson. Her Sept. 9 letter about Question 1 (“Power […]
Froma Harrop: Who wants to move to Texas?
[Texas] has a political culture that launches serial attacks on voting rights and obsesses over transgender youth in high schools. It has now deputized citizen creeps to hunt down anyone who helped a woman obtain an abortion — her parents included — for which they can collect a $10,000 bounty. And we’re only on our second cup of coffee.
