Renee Cote: Retain Maine’s beauty, reject power corridor
I thank Chelsea Washburn for her letter to the editor (“Legislators should back Mainers on power corridor,” July 1), which beautifully captures the meaning of “Maine: The Way Life Should Be.” The CMP corridor has nonpartisan opposition — Democrats, Republicans, and unaffiliated people are all part of the majority of Maine citizens who oppose it. […]
Bob Neal: The Countryman: Evermore efficiency
Almost from its start in 1906, the Department of Agriculture has pushed just one kind of efficiency: labor. The most common measure of labor efficiency is income per farmer, so the USDA has pushed factory farming to produce more income per farmer. But it comes at the expense of efficient use of land and machinery. Not to mention the quality of food.
Arthur Harvey and Elizabeth O’Keefe: Holman for Hartford Selectboard
We support Lee Holman for Hartford Selectboard. She was first elected in 2003, after working on the budget and road committees. She moved here at age 19, born in Lewiston. Even though she is paid a pittance for the hours she puts in, she gives the job her all. If residents care about the smooth […]
Patricia Bernard: Patriotism ‘not a dirty word’
Our Olympians are representing our country. I don’t care how good they are — athletes that insult our flag and national anthem should be banned from representing us. We spend millions on grants to colleges and the Olympic Committee that train them. Also, various businesses and charities support them. They are supposed to be a […]
Rich Lowry: The greatest revolution the world has ever known
Ours is the greatest revolution the world has ever known. It succeeded where so many others have failed, delivered a severe blow to monarchy and aristocracy, inspired republican movements around the world, and won the independence of a country whose power and ideals have influenced the course of history for the better.
In rebuttal: Mark Wood: Abortion not ‘a civil right from any angle’
Bob Neal’s June 26 column, “Dancing on the Head of a Pin,” left me more than a little bit annoyed. He claims to have learned his Sunday school lesson, “Thou shalt not kill,” but he still believes it is a civil right for women to kill their unborn children. He embraced ethical pluralism and its […]
Linda Deane: Mills should back Buy American, Build Maine act
The state Legislature recently passed the Maine Buy American and Build Maine Act, and now it’s up to Gov. Janet Mills to sign it. I spent years working in a paper mill and am a proud member of the United Steelworkers (USW) union, and current president of the Western Maine Labor Council. So I know […]
Chelsea Washburn: Legislators should back Mainers on power corridor
I live in Durham, a peaceful town, with the space to do what most here love: fishing, hunting and hiking, amongst many other adventurous, outdoor activities. The majority of Mainers unabashedly don’t want the CMP corridor. Yet two foreign companies have been working vigorously to silence us by financially and psychologically manipulating our elected officials. […]
