Fareed Zakaria: Trump is part of a worldwide populist assault on central banks

Around the democratic world, there is a power struggle taking place that might end up being the most damaging and long-lasting consequence of this era of populism. Elected leaders — from President Trump to Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan to India’s Narendra Modi — have been steadily attacking the independence of their nations’ central banks. This […]

Dr. Lori K. Parham, Sen. Heather Sanborn and Rep. Trey Stewart: Maine must make affordable prescriptions top priority

Prescription medications save lives and help millions of Americans deal with chronic disease and illness every day. They often allow people to remain well and active longer than would otherwise be possible. Yet, none of this matters if you can’t afford the medications you need. Most Mainers know firsthand what it’s like to get caught […]

Leonard Pitts: GOP, you look dopey when you attack AOC

Memo to the Republican Party: You might want to stop messing with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She’s a freshman congresswoman with no significant legislative achievements, so it makes little sense that you spend so much time and energy on her. Besides, every time you do, you end up getting pantsed. You’d think you’d learn. Yet, like Charlie […]

Marc Thiessen: Trump is right to call out Democrats for their hypocrisy on sanctuary cities

It is mystifying why Democrats are so up in arms about President Trump’s declaration that he is considering releasing illegal immigrants into so-called “sanctuary cities.” After all, Trump’s plan simply follows the Democrats’ own policy prescriptions for dealing with illegal immigrants. First, Democrats support releasing illegal immigrants into U.S. communities. Just a few months ago, […]

    Bob Neal: You’re getting warmer

On three key topics, the weight of public opinion and the actions of our elected leaders are out of sync. Global warming, immigration and background checks for gun buyers. In all three cases, public opinion favors governmental action. In all three cases, our elected officials, especially Congress, sit on their hands. Many of us just […]

Russia attacked us; the Mueller report still doesn’t give us the full story

In 2016, Russian President Vladimir Putin orchestrated a comprehensive attack on U.S. sovereignty by attempting to shape the outcome of our presidential election. Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his investigative team should be commended for providing amazing details about some aspects of this Russian intervention. But Mueller’s accounting should not be confused with the 9/11 […]

Froma Harrop: Paris and New York are united by urban horror

Many of us watching the inferno at Notre Dame de Paris felt that 9/11 dread. This week, as nearly 18 years ago, the news channels kept looping the same horrific video of towers collapsing. At the end, the medieval cathedral remained mostly standing while the twin towers at New York’s World Trade Center vanished into […]

Rich Lowry: Weep for Notre Dame

“I believe that this church offers the carefully discerning such cause for admiration,” the 14th-century French philosopher Jean de Jandun wrote of Notre Dame, “that its inspection can scarcely sate the soul.” A cultural calamity played out on live TV when the Paris cathedral that has been a focal point of Christendom for so long […]
