Sally Williams of Portland wears a homemade mask outside City Hall on April 12. Williams has been wearing masks in public for about three weeks. First, she wore handkerchiefs, but they "didn't feel quite right," she said. The she watched a tutorial on YouTube on how to make no-sew, no-elastic masks from t-shirts. Williams said she can make three masks from a single shirt.

Schwach said he had been wearing the face covering for about a week, which he describes as uncomfortable. Schwach, who works from home, said he relishes the opportunities to be outdoors. "Being outside helps," he said. "It's nice to be by the water and in the sun."
Michael and Jennifer Goldfinger, with their dog Mabel, wear masks outdoors for the first time on April 12 while walking on the Eastern Promenade Trail. Michael, a doctor, wore a mask from work, while Jennifer wore a mask made by a friend.

Jessica and Michael Craig of Portland sport masks they made from t-shirts, mostly tourist t-shirts from popular destinations like Key West. Michael said one of his masks was made from an "Andrew Yang 2020" shirt.
Hilary Babbitt of Portland wears a homemade mask on Congress Street on April 12. Babbitt, who has sewing skills, said she's been making masks for friends and coworkers. "I have a sewing machine and fabric I haven't been using," she said. "It's my way of doing my part. I can't do much else."
