A judge has approved a public defender to take on Steven H. Downs’ appeal of his conviction and sentence in the murder and sexual assault of an Alaska native woman.

Dr. Richard King, a trauma surgeon at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, received a direct commission to serve as a commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve in April. Next year, he’ll begin drilling with the 4th Medical Battalion of the U.S. Marine Corps.
