We categorically oppose the actions taken by the Ethiopian regime against Somali sovereignty and territorial integrity. We reject any attempts, be it through force or intrigue, to annex Somali land, air and waters. These are sacred and cannot be relinquished to another government.
Op-Eds
Bob Neal: The Countryman: Journalism 101 in late-night school
According to a study I saw a couple of years ago, when no reporter is sitting in on council, select board and planning meetings, local taxes rise between 1 and 5% in the first year. So, if your tax bill is $1,500 a year, your taxes would rise between $15 and $75 a year. It won’t take long for your tax increases to cost more than a subscription to a local paper.
Froma Harrop: Republicans turn themselves into the open borders party
Donald Trump has called on Republicans to kill a bipartisan deal that would give the president emergency powers to shut down the border when illegal crossings get out of hand. He’s thus helped President Joe Biden turn one of his political liabilities into a strength.
Rich Lowry: Will Margot Robbie survive?
Could there be a more amusing coda to the “Barbie” phenomenon than the Ken doll, played by Ryan Gosling, getting a best supporting actor nomination, while Barbie herself, played by Margot Robbie, got snubbed?
Cal Thomas: Biden’s bad deal
Uncontrolled immigration has reached the top of the list of voter concerns, ahead of the economy. Voters will decide in November what kind of America they want.
Clarence Page: Where the Civil War never seems to end — our presidential campaigns
Nikki Haley’s apparent sensitivity around offending GOP voters who don’t want to be thought of as racists, combined with the continuing debate around Jan. 6 and what it meant, has me wondering how much we’ve really put the Civil War behind us.
Cal Thomas: Supreme Court allows the invasion to continue
By a vote of 5-4, with two conservative justices joining the liberals, the Supreme Court has ruled that federal agents can cut razor wire installed along the Texas-Mexico border while a lawsuit over the wire continues.
Froma Harrop: U.S. oil and clean energy both boom under Biden
Is it possible that America is reducing reliance on foreign oil while also addressing the planetary need to move toward clean energy? It is possible, and it’s also happening. Biden’s America is enjoying a boom in both.
Austin Bay: Theater of panic repeat: Putin’s Russia threatens World War III and Alaska
January 2024: Russia threatens Latvia (a NATO nation) with retribution for confiscating a Russian-owned building that Russian spies used as a base of operation. Putin propagandist Margarita Simonyan warns a fight between Russia and NATO is imminent — in other words, World War III “in our lifetime.” Putin also issues a decree that includes claims on imperial Russian property in Alaska.
Rich Lowry: Joe Biden’s political death wish
Republicans will have to decide what to do on a border deal, perhaps sooner rather than later. But Biden is deciding to give Donald Trump an invaluable political gift every day.
