Winterport man arrested on charges he sexually abused, exploited children in Waldo County

Steven Mathis, 32, was apprehended in Texas and returned to Maine on Monday on allegations that he abused “several” children.

Hazel Fuller, a 17-year-old senior at the Thorndike high school, died Sunday morning when her SUV went off Route 220, also known as the Detroit Road.

Dr. Nirav Shah, Maine CDC director, said the state is clearly in the throes of a new wave of infections.

An outbreak connected to a Waldo County church continues to grow, and is now linked to 49 cases.

The single-day increase is the highest in nearly a month and the 7-day average of new cases is the highest it’s been since July 2.

Maine’s CDC director says more cases related to Brooks Pentecostal Church and its school can be expected in the coming days.
