OXFORD — The Eagle Court of Honor was held recently to honor Christopher Allen Hughes, the newest Eagle Scout of Troop 196.
Hughes, son of Brian and Kim Hughes of Otisfield, received the award at a ceremony at the American Legion Post 112.
The ceremony started with a color guard of Scouts carrying the flag while the national anthem played. The Rev. Joyce Long of the Casco Village Church gave the opening prayers. Hughes’ parents were escorted into the hall by assistant Scoutmasters David Newton and Pat Downing. Newton read Hughes’ accomplishments in scouting.
The award was pinned on by his mother. Post 112, represented by Bernard, Ted Hulnick read a letter from Gov. Angus King and state Sen. Rick Bennett. He was also presented at citation from the state. His father closed the program with a special poem.
Hughes joined the Boy Scouts in September 1995. He went on many camping trips and earned 33 merit badges in the process. He has also held many leadership positions in the troop.
Hughes was awarded his Eagle status by Newton and Joseph Bernard, American Legion representative to Troop 196.
Hughes’ Eagle project was to do a blood drive for the American Red Cross. Assisted by Alan McKenney and Nick Adams, Hughes made phone calls. He also received help along the way from his family, Scouts and scoutmaster.
