1948 – 2003

GREENWOOD – Shirley Ann Morgan Seames, 55, passed away Tuesday, April 8, at her home on Shadagee Lane after a long and courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by family and very much at peace.

She was born Feb. 26, 1948, in Norway, to Edgar H. and Julia (Briggs) Morgan. On Sept. 7, 1968, she married her best friend and high school sweetheart, Raymond W. Seames. She graduated from Woodstock High School in 1966, where she was noted for her participation in extracurricular activities, including athletics.

She attended the University of Maine at Gorham before earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Maine at Farmington in 1974, then her Masters Degree as a Literary Specialist from the University of Southern Maine. She played basketball at the University of Maine at Gorham.

She dedicated her life to the education of children, teaching in Bethel, Locke Mills, Woodstock, Norway, and Harrison elementary schools. During her 27 years of teaching she had the opportunity to mold and guide many children with her wit, charm, and compassion.

Many former students continued to contact her long after leaving her classroom. She was a close friend and mentor to her fellow teachers and continued to foster those relationships after her retirement in 2001.

She was a member of the National Educators’ Association, Maine Educators’ Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, and a charter member of the Greenwood Fire Department Auxiliary. She coached and was a strong advocate for youth sports as well as serving 13 years on the Greenwood Recreation Board.

Her first love was her family and a commitment to family values. She loved family gatherings, and enjoyed camping with family, especially at her favorite campground in Freeport and on the beach at Twitchell Pond. Competitive games of Scrabble and cards, along with many summer meals on the porch provided countless hours of family enjoyment.

Her passion for life, education and fun were an inspiration to all who had the pleasure of meeting and knowing her.

She displayed boundless enthusiasm for her trips with the “cousins”, Tuesday morning breakfasts with colleagues, trips to Foxwoods, and the many individual sessions with her special friends.

She is survived by her husband of Greenwood; three daughters, Lynn Cobb and her husband James of Mannheim, Germany, Laura Larriviere and her husband Art of Lewiston, and Sarah Seames of Lewiston; two grandchildren, Elise and James Cobb of Mannheim, Germany; three sisters, Gloria Robinson and her husband Royce of Groton, Conn., Carla Martin and her husband Clark of Greenwood, and Marcia Monk and her husband Percy of Bryant Pond; two brothers, Charles Johnson and his wife Wanda of Greenwood, and Gerald Johnson and his wife Virginia of Bryant Pond; and her mother-in-law, Florence Seames, with whom she enjoyed a special relationship.
