The program will showcase how the UMF faculty use technology as a teaching tool.
FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington invites the public to attend a demonstration of the ways UMF faculty and students are using technology in teaching and learning.
The Tuesday, April 15, presentation will feature faculty and students who will explain how they incorporated technology into their class work. Because the demonstrations and interactive exhibits will emphasize the university’s technology/teaching initiative – the UMF EXCEL program – the event is titled “EXCELebration.”
The free, public event will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. in North Dining Hall in UMF’S Olsen Student Center.
UMF assistant professor of science and science education Grace Eason will discuss the use of online resources, inquiry tools and presentation techniques in her biology and environmental science classes. She will also explain how one of her classes did a campus audit on the university’s environmental practices and created a Web site.
UMF associate professor of political science Scott Erb will describe how he has worked with students in his intentional relations class to create course-specific Web sites and other online materials.
Dean of the UMF College of Education, Health and Rehabilitation Kathy Yardley will give a presentation on the to-be-built Education UMF Building and describe how technology will be an integral part of the university’s state-of-the-art teaching facility.
The EXCELebration will also feature exhibits of faculty and student projects from many different academic disciplines, including science, mathematics and computer science, education, the humanities, visual and performing arts and special education. In addition, there will be exhibits from the UMF Computer Center, EXCEL Support Center and Instructional Media Center, as well as an exhibit featuring the new UMF observatory under construction in Industry.
The University of Maine at Farmington EXCELebration is sponsored by the UMF Provost’s Office. For more information, contact Kay Sullivan at [email protected] or 778-7306 or visit the EXCEL Web site at www.umf.maine.edu/excel/
