BOSTON. — Kari Vance twirled a three-hit, seven-strikeout gem in the opener, and University of Southern Maine Huskies invoked the eight run rule in the nightcap en route to a 4-0 and 9-1 doubleheader sweep of the host UMass-Boston Beacons on Tuesday afternoon.

Vance earned the complete-game shutout, leading the Huskies (18-6, 6-2) in the opener. Ashley Woodcock scored on a wild pitch to set the ball rolling. Jordan Gatcomb stroked a two-run double in the sixth inning to account for the final score.

Darci Holland contributed a pair of doubles and two runs, while Vance scattered a trio of singles and walked one.

In the nightcap, Alma Medina launched a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning to pull UMass-Boston within 2-1. However, the Huskies responded with two in the bottom of the frame and added five in the sixth to conclude the contest.

Kristi Steward collcted three hits, including a triple, and scored four runs, while Sarah McLean tallied a pair of hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Renee Heath added two hits, two RBIs and a run scored.

Katie Mainville tossed four hitless innings to earn the win, while Melissa Henderson pitched the final two innings to record the save.

Middlebury sweeps Bates

MIDDBLEBURY, Vt. — Middlebury took two from Bates, 6-1 and 6-2, in NESCAC action.

Christina Freyer had three singles and one RBI, while Kelly Slacker added two hits and plated a run in the opener.

Erin Foye stroked two singles and drove in the only run of the game for Bates (3-9).

Andrea Russo pitched all seven innings and recorded seven strikeouts to get the win, while Ginger Walsh took the loss.

Lauren Guza and Megan McCarthy each hit an RBI triple to lead Middlebury (10-7) to its second win of the day. Foye slapped two doubles while Dayna Krakower hit an RBI double for Bates. Walsh scored the only other Bates run.

St. Joe’s takes two

FARMINGTON — St. Joseph’s scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning to turn back the University of Maine at Farmington 7-2, then rolled to a 10-1 rout and a sweep of their doubleheader.

In Game 1, Kris Gaudette of St. Joe’s and Lauren Stacey of UMF hooked up in a pitching duel until the Monks’ rally. Gaudette had a two-run double to help her own cause.

Jessie Dennis hit a triple to bring in three RBIs for the second St. Joe’s win. Darcy Lee and Cortney Sirois each were multiple hitters for the Monks (8-8).

Dorice Reitchel was the Beavers’ only repeat hitter.

Lacrosse

USM 14, Lasell 5

GORHAM — Emily Kirkland netted a hat trick in the first half and finished the contest with five goals to lead Southern Maine to a 14-5 triumph over Lasell College.

With the score tied at 1-1 just over two minutes into the game, USM (2-7) erupted with six unanswered goals, highlighted by Kirkland’s hat trick. Lasell responded with four goals sandwiched around the halftime break to pull within two, but the Lasers couldn’t cut the deficit any further.

Laura Jurkowski and Deedra Beveridge tallied two goals apiece for the Huskies. Amanda Loomis, Tricia Kamp, Jesse Superchi, Avery McGill and Lindsey White each notched a goal.

Mandi Rapisardi and Margaret Coleman each scored a pair for Lasell.
