WATERVILLE – Lauren Gremelspacher crushed four goals to lead Colby to a 13-4 victory over Bates in women’s lacrosse action Thursday.
The Mules (11-3) clinched the fourth seed in the upcoming NESCAC tournament with the win.
Cara Dionisi chipped in with three goals and two assists, while Amanda Epstein also had a hat trick.
The Bobcats (7-8) received a single goal from Lori Jessup, the 100th of her career. She is the third Bobcat to accomplish the feat this season. Becky Castle, Liz Lawler and Leora Seri pitched in with a goal apiece. Goalie Liz McNamara had 24 saves for Bates.
Softball
UMF 12, Husson 3
FARMINGTON – Lauren Stacey allowed just three hits in five innings as the University of Maine at Farmington posted a 10-0 shutout win over Husson in game one of a midweek doubleheader. Cindy Pavinski’s home run sparked an eight-run fourth inning for UMF (10-8), while Dorice Reitchel added an RBI-triple. Richelle Dube also contributed to the win with a double.
Sophia Stanley’s grand slam in the second inning keyed a seven-run flurry as UMF completed the sweep with a 12-3 win in the nightcap.
Jessica Wenckus allowed only four hits while earning the victory.
USM-Plymouth State split
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Kim Jeffs took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of Game 1, but had to settle for a complete game victory as Plymouth State took the opener 3-2 and gave up the nightcap to Southern Maine, 2-0, in LEC softball action Thursday.
The Panthers (19-6) padded their lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning of Game 1 when sophomore Anna Godard walked and junior Maria Curran of cracked a two-run homer, the first of her career.
The Huskies (22-10) got on the board in the seventh when junior Angela Cote singled and senior Renee Heath followed with a two-run homer.
Katie Mainville kept the Panthers to four singles in the nightcap, while striking out five.
The Huskies scored the first run of Game 2 in the third inning on an RBI triple by Heath, and added an insurance run in the sixth on a single by freshman Caterina Riitano.
Baseball
Brandeis 4, St. Joseph’s 0
STANDISH – Mike Parissi scattered two hits and struck out seven batters to lead Brandeis to a 4-0 shutout win over St. Joseph’s in collegiate baseball action Thursday. Jon Brown went two-for-four with a double to support Parissi’s efforts. Nick Adams added a hit and one RBI.
USM 5, UMass Boston 2
BOSTON – Colin Loveless smacked a tie-breaking home run to lead off the seventh inning and lift the University of Southern Maine to a 5-2 win over the University of Massachusetts at Boston. The Huskies (19-11) had built a 2-0 lead on Loveless’s RBI single in the second inning and junior Brian Marshall’s sacrifice fly in the sixth.
The Beacons (5-20-1) drew even in their half of the sixth on Jon Ingall’s two-out double, followed by a two-run homer by sophomore Jon Tekela. Loveless broke the tie when he took a pitch from Jeff Mogan out of the park.
Erik Kent threw eight innings for the Huskies, allowing six hits and no walks while fanning two.
Mens’ Lacrosse
USM 12, Salem State 5
SALEM, MA. – Freshman Paul Dubiel tallied three goals to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 12-5 victory over Salem State in men’s lacrosse action. Jonathan Gagne and Dan Soule chipped in with two goals each for the Huskies (3-7). Mark Morissette needed only five saves while earning the win.
Eric Stanton and Brad Stalter posted two goals each for Salem State (0-9), while a single shot by Mike Raskeviz completed the scoring.
Mike Bates made 18 saves in the loss.
