PERU – “Operation Clean Up” officially began Tuesday with the first crew working in the town of Peru to clean up trash and rubbish along streets and highways.
The program, started last year, uses inmates from the Oxford County Jail to pick up the trash, according to Sheriff Skip Herrick.
Last year 17 towns requested assistance from the program, which is made availabe to every town in Oxford County. Six inmates were involved in the program last year, and approximately 239 miles of county roads were cleaned up.
Each town can request up to two days of labor for litter pickup. There is no cost to the towns for the service.
The inmates are screened, and only select inmates are eligible to participate. They are transported to the scheduled location in two-inmate teams and supervised by an Oxford County corrections officer. In return for their labors, participating inmates receive one day off their jail sentence for every two days worked.
The program also reduces the cost of housing in the county jail.
Herrick urged motorists to be aware of the work crews and the jail van traveling slowly along with them.
