LEWISTON – The Jesus Party, known for its urban ministry with area youth, will participate in the 52nd annual National Day of Prayer from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at the United Baptist Church, Main Street.
The ministry will join with various denominations throughout the faith community to pray for the nation, elected officials, communities and families. Jesus Party director Sonia Taylor has been selected to represent the youth of America by offering prayer on their behalf.
In response to the day of prayer, Lisa Kimball, 17, junior staff member of the ministry, will host the fourth annual March against Hate and Violence. She invites the community to join her as she leads a prayer walk to area schools.
Prayer participants will gather at Jesus Party headquarters, 291 Bates St., at 5:30 p.m. and walk to the following sites: Coburn Pre-School, Longley Elementary, Lewiston High School, Lewiston Middle School and finish on the corner of Campus and Central Avenues next to Bates College.
At each school anointing oil will be poured, a short prayer offered and a moment of silence for all those who have suffered from the effects of school violence. Kimball hopes that through this demonstration of faith participants will be encouraged to continue to pray for every level of education in the nation.
Participants will be shuttled back to the ministry headquarters to view a 27-minute documentary titled “Game Over in Littleton, Colo.” The film looks back at the tragic events that took place at Columbine High School through vivid recreations, personal reports, eyewitness accounts and expert commentary. A meal will be provided at the end of the evening. For more information call 786-5568.
