1915 – 2003

CANTON – Mary S. Vaughn, 88, died Saturday, April 26, at the Victorian Villa Nursing Home. She was a resident of the Dickvale Road in Peru.

Born in Peru, Feb. 6, 1915, the daughter of Sylvester and Bertha (Hopkins) Searles, she was a graduate of Dixfield High School with the Class of 1932.

Mrs. Vaughn was town clerk, treasurer and tax collector for the Town of Peru for many years and also served on various other committees. She was also the town manager for Buckfield until her retirement in 1980. She served two terms in the Maine State Legislature.

She wrote the history for the town of Peru for the years 1920 and on. She played the piano for the Searles Orchestra and for many others in the area.

She was married in West Peru, on Oct. 2, 1935 to her husband of 67 years, Milton A. Vaughn, who survives of Peru. Other survivors include her daughter; Faye Ring of Peru; granddaughter, Bethemy Ring of Rumford; a grandson, Gunnery Sgt. USMC Robert Ring and his wife, Cindy of Havelock, N.C.; four great-granddaughters, Heidi Merrill and Megan Gill of Rumford and Shannon and Natalie Ring of Havelock, N.C.; and a great-grandson, Peter Merrill of Dixfield.

She was predeceased by a sister, Stella Searles; and four brothers, Isaac, Fred, Frank and Bernard.
