SOUTH PORTLAND, (AP) – WGME-TV in Portland and WZON-AM in Bangor took “Station of the Year” honors Saturday night in the annual Maine Associated Press Broadcasters Association contest.

WGME-TV won first-place for best newscast. Its five other first-place finishes included public affairs for its reports on sprawl, spot news for coverage of a fire in Old Orchard Beach and top honors in both videography categories.

WMTW-TV had eight first-place finishes, the most of any station, including continuous coverage of the migration of Somalis to Lewiston and enterprise for its reports on heroin and methadone abuse. It also won best sportscast.

In the radio division, WZON won first place in three sports categories including best sportscast. Maine Public Radio and WGAN-AM in Portland had three first-place finishes and WMTW News Radio had two first-place finishes in news categories.
