MINOT – The Planning Board Tuesday night made a formal recommendation to charge $2,000 for each new residence and $500 for each new bedroom addition to pay for future expansion of the Minot Consolidated School.

The board is recommending that selectmen approve so-called the impact fees, which would be dedicated to school construction, according to guidelines adopted at the March town meeting.

Board Chairman John Geismar noted that school department officials had given the board information indicating that the cost per student for building additions to schools is between $9,000 and $13,000.

Other statistics show that, townwide, for every two houses there is one student in the school system. Thus, theoretically, the impact for each new dwelling in town is about $5,000.

The board went with $2,000 on the advice of Selectman Dean Campbell, who suggested they come up with a figure that was clearly justifiable and one that could be further refined.

Selectmen, according to impact fee guidelines, will hold two public hearings seeking input into the fee schedule before finalizing it.

In other business, the board met with Serae Hemond and learned that Hemond intends to have a noise sound study done to determine the noise generated at Hemond’s Motorcross located on Woodman Hill Road.

Hemond told the board she is hiring Tom Lovette of Canfield Systems, a firm she said has been recommended by the Maine Department of Enviromental Protection, to do the sound study. She said she should have results for the board’s June meeting.
