CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Bates College women’s outdoor track and field team finished an impressive sixth out of 48 teams at the 2003 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships which wrapped up Sunday afternoon at the Steinbrenner Track.

Bates improved its finish from last year by 18 spots. First-year thrower Kelly Godsey won the shot put event with a throw of 42-9, winning by .75 inches. She also took first in the hammer throw with a toss of 170-8, winning by almost 10 feet. Godsey also earned All-ECAC honors in the discus, showing her versatility in the throwing events, with a toss of 119-02.

Sophomore Tiffany Tropino was the top finisher for Bates in the discus, placing fifth with a mark of 121-02. Sophomore Karissa Carey placed seventh in the hammer throw. earning All-ECAC honors, with a throw of 142-11. Senior co-captain Kelley Puglisi posted an NCAA Division III provisional time of 2:16.04 in the 800-meter run, placing sixth in the event.

The team improved its finish from last year by eight spots. Bates had a total of nine All-ECAC performances highlighted by first-year hurdler Adam Macbeth. Macbeth earned All-ECAC honors after placing sixth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.08) and fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (55.93). His time in the 110-meter hurdles was .04 seconds shy of tying the school record. First-year sprinter Joel Colony earned All-ECAC honors when he finished fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.01) and after running a leg in the 4×400-meter relay team that finished seventh.

Tennis

ST. PETER, Minn. – Bates College first-year men’s tennis player William Boe-Wiegaard was knocked off in the second round Sunday afternoon in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-3, by Nick Barnes of Coe College at the 2003 NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Singles Championships at Gustavus Adolphus College.

Boe-Wiegaard ends his season with a record of 16-8 after winning his opening round match Saturday in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) against Andy Campbell of Rhodes College.
