RUMFORD – Plans are in the works to extend the municipal sewer lines on a significant portion of the Wyman Hill Road.

Selectmen said on Thursday the town has been saving up for the project for several years. This is the year it will start.

Board Chairman Jim Thibodeau said the extension will begin just off Route 108 and go for about half the 1-mile distance toward the intersection with the Franklin Annex Road. The remainder of the work will be done at a later date.

Town Manager Robert Welch said more than 20 homes are located on Wyman Hill Road. Plans have been in the works for quite sometime to extend the line into this area, he said.

The board also heard a presentation by Rosie Bradley, executive secretary of the River Valley Growth Council and newly elected River Valley Chamber of Commerce president, on plans for an area-wide business exposition in September to showcase the River Valley.

Along with exhibits of businesses, organizations and the arts and crafts community, Bradley said organizers hope each of the area’s 10 municipalities will create a booth or display.

“We want to showcase everything we have in the area,” she said. “We want to be as inclusive as we possibly can.”

She said two special meetings have been set to provide information on the importance of the business showcase for area businesses and others for next Wednesday.

Thibodeau said the town will put together a display, although the details haven’t been determined.

Also on Thursday, the board approved a low-interest loan for Melissa Erskine, a local landlord who wants to replace electrical work at a multi-unit apartment complex on Hancock Street. The board approved lending $5,300 at a rate of 4 percent for three years.

They also agreed to participate in the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department Operation Cleanup program on June 5 and 6. At that time, several county jail inmates will pick up debris along town roads.

The board approved hawker’s and peddler’s licenses for Smiley’s Food Concession, Mike’s Italian Ice and the Firemen’s Relief Association.

At the request of Selectman Eugene Boivin, the board will take up a possible change in the times residents may apply for building permits. Boivin said he has received several complaints on the hours currently available.
