NORWAY – A benefit street dance will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 23, at the Second Congregational Church. There will be all types of music for all ages. Admission is $4 per person. Buckfield parade

BUCKFIELD – A Memorial Day parade will begin at 9 a.m. Monday, May 26, at the Buckfield Municipal Center. The parade will march to the village square where a program will be held presented by guest speaker Rosita Gagne, a state representative. Parade participants will then be bused to the Buckfield Damon Cemetery where a short service will be held at a veteran’s grave site. Members will be bused back to the municipal center following the service.

NORWAY – A Memorial Day parade will be held with assembly to begin at 8:15 a.m. Monday, May 26, on Bridge Street. The parade will begin at 8:30 a.m. and proceed to Witheral Park for a wreath laying at the Civil War Memorial by Marilyn Jones, Unit 82, past president. The parade will continue down Main Street to the Veteran’s Memorial Park where services will be conducted. The order of the parade is as follows: mounted marshall: Harley Stevens, WWII veteran; color guards: Post 82 American Legion and Post 9787 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Marching Veterans; cars: Transportation will be available for those unable to march; Norway Fire Department; Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School Band; poppy banner carried by Molly Weiss and Deanna Merchant; 2003 Poppy Girl: Erica Simmons; Auxiliary Units; Pack 166 Cub Scouts; marching children. Master of ceremonies for the service will be Robert Sessions, past commander, Post 82 American Legion. Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address will be recited by Kyle Ingram and “Flanders Field” by Savannah Sessions. The speaker will be state Rep. Sawin Millett. Coffee, punch and doughnuts will follow at the Legion Home. All area veterans also are invited to attend a 10 a.m. service of memorial at the Second Congregational Church on Sunday, May 25.

OXFORD – Members of the American Legion Anderson Staples Post 112 will observe Memorial Day with a parade and ceremony Monday, May 26, beginning with parade assembly at 8:45 a.m. at the elementary school on Pleasant Street. The ceremony will be at the Post Home on King Street. Members of the American Legion Post are asking that all Oxford residents pause to remember America’s fallen sons and daughters on Memorial Day. Eph Jillson, commander of Post 112, said, “We want everyone in Oxford to know that the American Legion Post 112 is still serving America and will continue to serve this country, our state, and our community in the years to come. We encourage all of our community to join us and pay tribute this year.”

Poet’s tribute

PARIS – The McLaughlin Garden Foundation Garden and Horticultural Center will present Dan Lakeman, a national award-winning reader, in the annual performance of Walt Whitman’s tribute to Abraham Lincoln, “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed,” at 11 a.m. Monday, May 26, at the center at 97 Main St. People can come to hear him and also enjoy the gardens. Relay for Life

RUMFORD – Area residents are being encouraged to join the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life Friday and Saturday, May 30 and 31, at 6 p.m. at Hosmer Field. The relay will continue for 18 hours to raise money to fight the battle against cancer. People can form a team or join a team. They also can sponsor a luminaria. Fair association

WATERFORD – The North Waterford Fair Association will hold a work day on the fairgrounds beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday, June 1. The association is in the planning phases for the World’s Fair, the littlest fair to be held on July 25, 26, and 27 at the fairgrounds in North Waterford. Events and entertainment so far will include Smokey’s Greatest Shows for the midway with many new items; Debbie Myers and her salute to the Grand Ol’ Opry and Ed Morris and the Balloon Zoo with his hypnosis show. Also included will be the horse shows, tractor pulls, oxen and steer show, 4-wheel-drive pulls and more. Anyone is invited to help with the work day, or to join the association. Run to the Lake

NORWAY – The 2nd annual Oxford Hills 8K Run to the Lake will be held Sunday, July 13, beginning at the Guy E. Rowe School at 123 School St. The 1K Fun Run will be held at 7:45 a.m., the 5K Fitness Walk at 8 a.m., and the 8K Race Walk at 8:30 a.m. Interested participants can register on the day of the race. Cost for the 8K is $5, $3 for the 5K Fitness Walk, and the 1K Fun Run is $2. T-shirts will be issued to the first 100 entrants.
