WASHINGTON – Good Neighbors Inc. will receive a $10,000 federal loan to renovate and expand a residence for mentally retarded adults in downtown Bridgton, according to Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins.

Good Neighbors Inc. will use the funding to build an additional bedroom on the ground floor of the residence to accommodate a third resident who is unable to use the stairs.

“We are very pleased to see the federal government and a local organization working together to meet the needs of a single individual in Maine. That is what private-public partnerships and good government are all about,” Snowe and Collins said in a joint statement.

“We applaud the noble and selfless work of Good Neighbors Inc. – they are truly working to improve the quality of life for Maine’s disabled residents. This project is symbolic of their commitment to ensuring every person has access to the services they need to live comfortably,” they said.

The funding comes through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development Program. As of 2002, Good Neighbors supported seven residential locations spanning three counties: Cumberland, York, and Oxford.
