Once again, the city of Lewiston is showing its anti-business side.

I am an employee of a small family-run businesses being pushed to extinction. We were recently given notice that any business on downtown Lisbon Street will be unable to advertise their business via sidewalk signs.

Businesses have been using signs like this for many years, but all of a sudden it’s illegal. This may seem unimportant to most but, let’s face the facts, Lewiston’s downtown is on life support and the city has its greedy fingers on the plug, ready to pull.

The biggest issue we have is parking. This has been a problem ever since the sidewalk/awning mistake done back in the early ’80s.

Now we have the courthouse. We now have to deal with law enforcement, lawyers and the like parking for long periods of time.

I would also like to ask any business owners and employees in this area who park on the street for long periods of time to please stop. This is making all of us lose customers.

Maybe it’s the big city price of $45 per month to park in the municipal lot that possesses people to park where they shouldn’t.

Why is the city trying to kill the downtown by telling everybody it is trying to improve it?

It seems that unless your business takes up a huge building and the name ends in “mart,” the city just does not want you here.
