PERU – Large rocks lying just under the surface of Ridge Road and seeping water are hampering progress on the resurfacing, Road Commissioner David Gammon told selectmen Monday night.

The rocks must be removed because they will continue to heave and ruin the new surface, he said, and plans are to blast them this week. The road will be closed during that time.

Gammon asked selectmen to approve getting fuel from the newly opened Dixfield Discount Fuel and eliminating the town tanks. Selectmen approved.

Gammon said he had two more culverts to install and would be finished with that phase of the work.

Selectmen went into executive session with a resident on a personnel matter. The session was brief.

Selectman Ron Chartier was authorized to ask someone mentioned as a possible animal control officer if they would accept the job. McKennel’s Animal Adoption Agency would be able to take animals from an animal officer on a 24-hour basis, it was stated.

Building permits were issued to Richard Haines for a tool shed, Tim Porter for a porch and Kerry Merrill to cover a cement slab with wood and add railings as long as he put no cover on.

Town Clerk Vera Parent reported that back taxes were coming in and she would have a list of the delinquent taxpayers for selectmen soon. She also reminded them to vote Tuesday in the statewide referendum.

Selectmen voted to have the septic systems shut down on those people who have not paid their part of the fee by July 15 for the replacement of the system on the school property. In discussion of the situation the selectmen said the people have had ample warnings.
