NORWAY – Leslie Flanders bested former Selectman Ron Snow, 2-to-1, to win a two-year seat on the Board of Selectmen, while incumbent Selectman Chairman Russell Newcomb easily won re-election to a second three-year term Tuesday.

Although he’s never run for office, Flanders has often given his opinion at public meetings over the years, and is a well-known local electrical contractor who has done work for the highway, sewer and water departments.

A village resident who has lived in Norway almost his whole life, Flanders said he would like to see the downtown Opera House returned to local control. He’d also like to see the town become more directly involved in downtown revitalization efforts.

Flanders received 219 votes to Snow’s 108 votes. A third candidate, Carol Roth, received 90 votes.

Snow served two years as selectman from 1993 to 1999.

Newcomb received 212 votes against challengers Ronald Blake Jr., with 57 votes, William Daniels, with 87 votes, and Ray Parks, with 39 votes.

Newcomb said he is excited about upcoming water, sewer and road projects in town, especially the work to be done this summer on Main and Beal streets. He said the town has made progress on improving its outlying roads.

Newcomb works for Allen’s Auto Sales in Norway and has operated his own snowplowing and sanding business for more than 20 years.

SAD 17 Board of Directors incumbents Diane Gurney and Tim Ingram were unopposed and won re-election to another three-year term. Also winning another three-year term was Fire Chief Michael Mann Sr. and Edgar Damon, a trustee of the Norway Memorial Library.
