CAPE ELIZABETH (AP) – A new study recommends that Cape Elizabeth upgrade the trails, landscaping and concrete batteries at Fort Williams Park, home of the Portland Head Light, while taking steps to prevent overcrowding.

The report, written by the Fort Williams Advisory Commission, attempts to strike a balance between residents who want the park upgraded and those who prefer a more rustic atmosphere.

The 90-acre park attracts more than 1 million visitors a year.

The report recommends landscaping the grounds around the lighthouse, extending the Cliff Walk trail, restoring some gardens and terraces, and developing a new trail.

The commission concluded that the park has reached capacity in terms of vehicles. It calls for no additional parking and recommends that new bathroom facilities not cater to tour bus traffic.

Donna Hanson, vice president of The Maine Tour Connection, which brings more than 200 buses to the park each year, has and will continue to push for better bathroom facilities. The park has portable johns.

Commission members said the report, which the Town Council and Planning Board will review on Thursday, considers everyone’s wishes.

“I think the best we can do is say let’s not mess up a good thing,” said Alan Barthelman, the panel’s chairman.
