1919 – 2003

SOUTH PARIS – Herbert E. Cantwell, 83, died on Sunday, June 15, at the Maine Veterans Home.

Born in Providence, RI, on Sept. 18, 1919, he was the son of Thomas J. and Caroline Crawford Cantwell. He served in the United States Army, in both World War II and the Korean War as a radio operator.

On Dec. 26, 1949 he married Mrs. Gertrude Whalen Cantwell, who has been by his side for the past 53 years. He worked as a purchasing director for Bates Manufacturing Inc. and prior to his retirement in 1989 also worked for J.W. Penney, Twin City Printery, and MAC Courier Services of Westbrook.

He served as Past Commander of the American Legion Post 22 in Lewiston. He was a member of the Androscoggin Amateur Radio Club Inc., a member of the Purchasing Management Association of Maine, and served as a member on the hospitality committee of St. Phillips church in Auburn.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed canoeing, bicycling, fishing and walking the coastline of Two Lights Park in Cape Elizabeth.

A charter member of St. Philips Church in Auburn, he is survived by his wife, Gertrude Whalen Cantwell of Lewiston; one daughter, G. Patricia Cantwell, MD and daughter in love, Dolores Serrecchia of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; one brother, Thomas J. Cantwell and wife Jean of Riverside, Calif.; two grandchildren, Justin and Brandon Serrecchia; one great-grandchild, Neiko Serrecchia; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his twin brother, Robert C. Cantwell; and his two sisters, Carol McGuire, and Margaret Anne Cantwell.
