JAY – International Paper announced Wednesday that it would temporarily shut down paper machine No. 4 for one week next month. There are no layoffs planned as result of the down time.

The market-related down time for the week of July 7 for the coated paper machine, which makes paper for catalogs and magazines, is an effort by the company to “more effectively balance supply with customer orders,” Communications Manager Fiona McCaul stated in a release.

“We continue to experience a difficult market,” Androscoggin Mill Manager Mike Craft stated. “As always, safety remains a priority for the mill. Employees also are concentrating on what we can control in “strengthening customer focus and operational excellence.”

Employees who work on the machine will work in different departments to meet business needs, McCaul said. Some will do scheduled maintenance on No. 4 and others will take vacation time, McCaul said. The machine is expected resume production Monday, July 14.

It is the second temporary shutdown of a machine since May 25. At that time, No. 1 paper machine, which produces uncoated paper for copying machines, business forms and some fast-food bags, was shut down for two weeks. It went back online June 9. There were no layoffs during that time either.
