1927 – 2003

CANTON – Margaret R. Howes, 76, of Rumford, died Thursday, June 26, at the Victorian Villa Rehabilitation and Living Center.

A lifelong resident of the area, she had made her home on the Swain Road, Rumford.

She was born in Rumford, Feb. 12, 1927, the daughter of Leo and Margaret (Leeman) McHale, and graduated from Stephen’s High School in Rumford.

She had been employed at the Bennet Shoe Shop in Rumford and was a communicant of St. Athanasius-St John Church in Rumford. She was married in Bridgeport, Conn., in 1946 to Alton Howes who survives of Rumford. Other survivors include a daughter, Margaret E. Howes of Mexico; three sons, Walter of Tampa, Fla., David of Lewiston, and Arthur Howes of Mexico; two sisters, Mrs Patricia Gautreau of Mexico, and Mrs. Dorothy Benedix of Rumford; a brother, Francis McHale of Hopewell, Va.; many grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Alton Howes Jr.; a brother, James McHale; and two sisters, Catherine Burell and Ellen Vallee.
