PARIS – The Paris Public Library’s Slate-Painting Auction for 2003 has begun. Local artists, including Lee Bean, Reggie Jack, Sharon Merrill, Ruth McAllister and Heather Hastings, have painted on slates taken from the library’s roof during the construction of the Jeannette Merrill Soule Addition, to create works of art.
At present, there are 12 paintings on display at the library, with more expected soon. The paintings are joined this year by a special hand-woven wool rug crafted by Methyl Belanger.
These items will be on display at the library during the month of July, and will make appearances at the Norway Sidewalk Art Festival and Paris Hill’s Founders Day. The auction will conclude at the end of the library’s annual book sale on July 26. A tote board at the library and the festivals will list the current high bid for each item.
