YORK (AP) – Police released the identity Saturday of a Florida man who died in an effort to rescue his 9-year-old grandson in the surf and cold water off State Neck Point in York Harbor.

Authorities said Melvin Urquhart, 68, of Estero, Fla., was pronounced dead at York Hospital.

York Police said the boy had been swimming at Harbor Beach on Friday when he was overcome by the surf and undertow.

His grandfather swam out but he was unable to reach the boy.

The boy’s father entered the water and rescued his son and the father and three others found the grandfather and pulled him to shore.

Police said the boy was held overnight at York Hospital for observation.
