BETHEL – More than 200 athletes from throughout New England and Quebec will stream into Bethel this weekend for a swim, cycle and run.

Starting at 8 a.m. Sunday, July 27, the 12th annual Maine State Triathlon Classic begins from Songo Pond with a one-kilometer swim. Then, the swimmers will hop on bicycles for a 25-kilometer ride on the scenic Routes 5 and 35 back to downtown Bethel and finish the race with a five-kilometer run through the woods on Gould Academy’s cross country trails.

Last year’s top male finisher completed the triathlon in one hour, six minutes and 38.2 seconds, while the top female athlete did it in one hour, 18 minutes and 48 seconds, said Rosalie Holliday of the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce.

Although teams or individuals compete in the race, Holliday said organizers have reached their maximum level of competitors so the online registration and same-day registration is closed.

However, they have had a few cancellations, so she advised latecomers to call first to learn about any openings.

For more information about the triathlon, people may phone 800-442-5826.
