TORONTO – Rocco Baldelli hit a go-ahead two-run single in the ninth inning as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays rallied for a 9-8 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night.
Travis Lee and Aubrey Huff homered for the Devil Rays, who rallied from 4-0 and 7-6 deficits.
Toronto’s Carlos Delgado hit his AL-leading 31st homer in the ninth, cutting the lead to 9-8.
Toronto’s Greg Myers homered twice, including a go-ahead three-run shot in the seventh. He set a career high with his 12th homer and tied a career high with five RBIs. The 37-year-old catcher went 2-for-4, raising his average to .335.
After Tampa Bay’s Julio Lugo singled off Aquilino Lopez leading off the ninth, Trever Miller (1-2) got one out before loading the bases by giving up Antonio Perez’s single and walking Huff. Baldelli followed with a single past diving shortstop Mike Bordick and gave Tampa Bay a 8-7 lead.
Damian Rolls hit an RBI sacrifice fly one out later to make it 9-7.
Al Levine (3-5) pitched 1 2-3 innings for the win, and Lance Carter got three outs for his 17th save.
Toronto’s Vernon Wells singled off reliever Jesus Colome before Levine walked Carlos Delgado in the seventh. Myers followed with his homer, giving Toronto a 7-6 lead.
Toronto starter Kelvim Escobar, who is eligible for free agency after the season and could be dealt before the July 31 trade deadline, allowed five runs – three earned – on eight hits in six innings in a no-decision.
Myers hit an RBI sacrifice fly in the first and a homer in the fourth, giving Toronto a 2-0 lead.
Reed Johnson’s RBI single and Vernon Wells’ run-scoring single in the fifth made it 4-0.
The Devil Rays batted around in the sixth and scored five runs on Travis Lee’s three-run homer, Baldelli’s RBI grounder and Julio Lugo’s run-scoring single.
Huff homered in the seventh, giving Tampa Bay a 6-4 lead.
